Fatventure Magazine is Here!

My article, an intro to bike touring, photographed in the wild by Mary Ann Thomas.

It’s been in the works since this Spring and I am so very excited to be a part of it. It is Fatventure Magazine, printed and digital magazine focusing on active lifestyles beyond the boundaries of weight-loss culture. Adventure culture, in general, is so en vogue and that’s great and all but it’s really been in the last year or two that marginalized people are starting to get to participate in a meaningful way. I am an avid bike tourer and hiker (hopefully backpacker as well in the future) and it is so great to see other queer people, women/non-binary people, and especially people of all body types, starting to get recognition and find community. We’re out here being active and, in this case, publishing as well.

I love publishing online and am glad digital media has made a lot of things so accessible but another reason I am particularly excited about this release is that there is a print copy as well. I haven’t had a piece published in a print magazine for almost 5 years since I was the Editor for the ill-fated Just Out resurrection. I haven’t gotten my hands on the physical copy yet but my fellow queer bike tourer Mary Ann Thomas (whose very long distance bike travels through the US in 2014 and India in 2017 are fascinating and I recommend you read anything on them you can find) went to the launch party in NYC this weekend and took a snapshot of my article in the wild. Editors Alice Lesperance and Samantha Puc read, as well as Autostraddle’s Community and Travel Editor Vanessa Friedman, and boy do I wish I could have been there.

If you contributed to the Kickstarter your copy should be on its way to you shortly, but you can also purchase both the digital and print editions over at the FV website and I recommend you do, not just for my piece but the multitude of fat voices that really sing out.
